Rollin,
Betty ,
1985
Simon & Schuster
First Edition,
Hardcover
ISBN:
9780671525972
Betty Rollin was a well known TV journalist before she changed focus to writing. “First You Cry,” an account of her 1975 cancer diagnosis, was a best-seller, followed by “Last Wish,” a book about the issue of assisted suicide for the terminally ill. In confronting the task of creating a cover for the latter book, Fred chose to focus on the universal symbol of comfort for illness and death, with his simple and eloquent painting.

A stylized portrait of Bela Lugosi as Dracula? Why not? The book might just make your spine tingle. It also covers the story of the real Count Dracula, and the truth about vampire bats. Once again, note Fred’s airbrushed background.

In broad strokes, Fred manages to summarize the notion of “art,” without depicting any. Except, of course, his own beautifully rendered illustration.

An actress throws the coins of the I Ching to foretell her future. Bad idea. Fred read every novel before beginning to work on its cover. He always aimed to visually “crystalize” (his word) the author’s intention, as was the case here.

Summit Books
First Edition,
Hardcover
ISBN:
9780671648589
Again, here’s the “big book look,” with the author’s name greatly overpowering the title, for this first edition. The novel is an update of Louisa May Alcott’s classic, but takes place in Hollywood. Fred managed to marry the two elements with his clever bookmark.

The heroine of this novel has a special gift: she can observe the dreams of others. For the first edition of this haunting psychological thriller, Fred painted a sleeper as seen from above, with virtuosic treatment of the bedsheets’ folds.

Black Mask Magazine was a pulp monthly published from 1920 to 1951, which launched such genre superstars as Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett and Erle Stanley Gardner. For this anthology of classic short stories from its pages, Fred envisioned the prototype hero, hard-boiled as they come.

Fred’s art scholarship was vast. He mastered visual styles from far and wide, century by century, country by country. For this book about the legendary Kurt Weill, he enjoyed reflecting the typography of Germany in the 1920s and ‘30s.

The title essay in this collection describes the author’s upbringing at an Army base/arsenal in Ohio. Fred’s visual summary presents a toy soldier stealthily taking aim at a clover flower. The very rough lettering style was a radical, but entirely apt, departure for him.

More often than not, publishers relied on Fred to create jackets for their works of ”serious fiction.” On occasion, as here, he was asked to deal with a work of pure scholarship, a study on newly unearthed Maya hieroglyphs. His approach was to simply get out of the way, and present the material under discussion unadorned, although not without some of his typographic wizardry.

As Steven Heller has written, Fred was a “master of sky.” Here, a bit of it appears framed by the Berlin Wall, the subject of this book, infusing both sky and wall with subtle eloquence. A later edition depicts, guess what? Yep, a man jumping off a wall.

Fred used to say that, in his opinion, gardening was the highest art form. In his hands, it certainly was. He was never happier than when working in his many gardens in the upstate New York country house. His illustration for the jacket of this compendium of relevant suppliers is certainly an explicit translation of the title, and also of his self-identity.

For this collection of short biographies of the world's greatest violinists, Fred created a powerful illustration in his favorite medium of the time, airbrush. The instrument bursts out of its designated location, defying the viewer to question its importance.

It’s probably not unusual for a thirteen-year-old boy to fantasize about escaping parental burdens by just flying away. In this book for young readers, the hero does just that. As usual, Fred found a way to tell the story in one image.
